With a Rainbow On-line Learning Programme you and your tutor interact on-line as effectively as if you were in the same classroom. The easy to-install software programme links your computer to that of the tutor allowing you both to speak in real time, and view learning materials simultaneously including your online window whiteboard, newspaper articles and book pages.

Rainbow has a careful tutor selection process. All our tutors are native speakers, fully qualified as language teachers with a university degree and have proven track records in teaching languages for business and general purposes. Rainbow have a careful monitoring process in place ensuring that standards are maintained.

Rainbow’s aim is to give you the skills to use the target language in the real world with confidence. From the outset your course will be extremely practical, while at the same time ensuring a solid grasp of the grammar and correct use of the language.

At the time your class is scheduled to begin double click on the net meeting icon in your programme folder. Click “call”, type in the email address of your tutor, and just wait to hear your tutor’s voice. Your tutor will provide the learning material online and advise you on how to use it.

Teaching is student led and the emphasis is on a lively and interactive approach. Language structures and vocabulary are introduced at a pace suited to the student and practiced with an emphasis on developing key skills identified in the course plan: writing business letters, dealing with telephone conversations, taking part in meetings and negotiations.

Self-study plays a key role in on-line language training and your course plan will include a minimum 3 hours self-study to each on-line session.

The self-study tasks are aimed at consolidating what you have covered in your class and acquiring new vocabulary and language skills to practice with your tutor in your following online session. Tasks are set by your tutor and are based on learning materials such as CD ROM, audiotapes, textbooks and exercises specifically designed by your tutor.

On the basis of the information gathered your personalised course plan will be presented to you for approval. Your course plan will include:

• Evaluation of present language proficiency
• Your proficiency targets
• Statement of language objectives
• Language structures and general vocabulary to be covered
• Special language requirements e.g. law, finance, technology
• Work-specific skills to be covered e.g. Telephone skills, letter writing
• Suggested learning materials
• Schedule for on-line sessions required to achieve your targets
• Schedule for self-learning required to achieve your targets

Your progress is monitored throughout the course to identify any language areas requiring particular attention. The results are shown in your personal progress chart at the end of each term.

Online training offers you the flexibility of taking your class either at home or in your work place, it also allows you greater flexibility in timetabling. Please ask at time of planning your course, if you require training at unsociable hours e.g. evenings, early mornings or weekends, according to tutor availability. We will do our best to match your preferred time of day with the availability of our tutor. If you need to cancel an online session we will not charge for the session provided that you give us 24 hours notice.

Computer system requirements

Most PCs less than 4 years old will have the required components installed.

Your PC equipment needs to meet the following specifications:

• Sound card
• Minimum 90MHz processor
• 16 megabytes (MB) of RAM for Microsoft Window 95, Window 98, Windows

• 4 MB of free hard disk space (an additional 10 MB is needed during the installation only)
• Headphone with microphone
